We invite to “Polish way of learning the world” – permanent, non - European exhibition at Municipal Museum in Żory. How did Poles learn the world? What discoveries did they make? What were the trails of their roam? These are questions, which can be answered.

Exhibition leads a visitor through continents, branches of science, exhibits and lots of mysteries. It is not a reveal of further characters but a maze of informations, pictures and maps arranged in a special scenography. While taking off on a journey to gather knowledge you should go by a ship or train – exactly those means that were used by pioneers of polish way of learning the world.

ABOUT AN EXHIBITION

An idea about an exhibition “Polish way of learning the world” was born under influence of statement that the history of Polish art of arranging exhibitions does not contain all of the contribution of Poles into describing the world. Exhibitions has shown chosen parts of the history of exploration to unveil silhouettes of explorers or objects acquired by them rather than to encompass it in synthetic approach.

Purpose of this exhibition is to present not only historical contribution of Poles into development of studies but also contemporary researches led in different places of the world. Because of the size of contents, which are in this subject, selection of contents became a necessity. Subject was supposed to fit to real possibilities of an exhibition. By analysing various ideas, it was decided to take a branch of humanistic studies as an destined, exploratory area subdued to every subject. So while setting up an exhibition included were : ethnographic, antrophologic and archaeologic researches and also explorations of related studies.

“Polish way of learning the world” sketches a broad range of subject. It is impression that makes one think rather than closed answer for exploratory question. Material form in the form of exhibits was combined with an virtual, advanced note. In this way, a material item with a cultural and historical background is combined.

A setting of this exhibition is based on geographical, cultural and figurative division. An element that glues ingredients of cognitive jigsaw on time and space level is a scenography. An arrangement of free space contains elements of travel-like staging bonded with means of transport. Learning is based on context of problem of people’s movement – by the sea, on land, by feet or by train.

This exhibition contains over 300 exhibits derived from collections of Municipal Museum in Żory, National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, Ethnographic Museum in Kraków, National Museum in Warsaw, Museum of Asia and Pacific in Warsaw, National Museum in Szczecin. Exhibits were picked up paying attention to present not only cultural connections but also to show the riches of artistic and technological solutions. In this way, among displayed exhibits there are some unique objects in terms of historical value, which can impress with artistry, material and destination and also these, which are a contemporary note to historical researches.

An exposition is not enclosed in terms of time and space of whole. Stock of informations is expanded with new silhouettes of explorers and informations about new projects, but also about contemporary researches, so it’ll become “encyclopaedia” of polish way of learning the world.

Authors hope that this exposition will be an signal to study and seek even more, instead of giving a “ready-made” answer. Advanced note to an exposition (due to its virtual version) will be its new face. It will give an ability to a visitor to come back and read those messages once again.

A few words from commissioner

The exhibition “Polish way of learning the world” is an image of exploratory subject. It is thought not only as a single event, but rather as a cycle of exhibition, that undergoes periodic adjustments to discover further scientists and researchers, further exhibits, events. Main advantage of this exhibition is not only historical, but also contemporary way of approaching this subject. That is how a visitor will be able to know “current” history of polish way of learning the world in terms of informations about contemporary projects and scientific researches.

Arrangement of this exhibition is made by “SOWA-SZENK” from Wrocław. History of polish way of learning the world has not been approached literally, in dependence of unveiling new figures. Dynamics, but also historical order of narration are given by chosen means of transport, distinctive in terms of intensification of learning particular geographic area.
