Passport mask – MŻo/A/3555
Origin: Dan ethnic group, Ivory Coast
Date: 1990s
Description: The small masks made by the Dan people were mainly used in initiation rites. Some associations supporting the education of children (Man, Ivory Coast) sell such masks, thus raising funds for students in need.
Can be worn as amulets. The Danes wore small masks (less than 20 cm high) that are sometimes called "passport" masks. They are sewn to a piece of cloth and kept in a leather pouch and possibly worn on the cross of the back. They are miniature copies of the family mask.
